>> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm dan kloeffler. talking about the talent competition from miss america last night. the big winner crowned. we'll have it later on. >> we're kind of surprised because -- >> we might be able to one up this talent on -- >> you think so? >> possibly. we may be stopping in the kitchen if that's a hint for what this talent may be. >> i'm curious. >> making big bucks on this one. a lot to get to. we begin with the growing scandal surrounding the nfl. >> yet another pro football player has been benched amid an expanding controversy over domestic violence. finding himself in the red zone, nfl commissioner roger goodell. this banner flown over metlife stadium yesterday by a woman's rights group says it all. #goodellmustgo. here's abc's ryan smith. >> reporter: another nfl star player sidelined. just before kickoff, the carolina panthers deactivating defensive end greg hardy. hardy convicted of assaulting

his girlfriend in july. this chilling 911 call came from a neighbor. >> we need the police here now before this girl gets seriously hurt. now. >> reporter: hardy was allowed to play while he appealed his conviction. but that decision scrutinized by many in the wake of the growing scandals around domestic violence in the nfl. above stadiums, calls for the embattled nfl commissioner to step down. >> in the midst of this incredibly important conversation about domestic violence and the worst scandal in the history of u.s. pro sports, the nfl doesn't get it right. >> reporter: minnesota viking adrian peterson booked for allegedly hitting his 4-year-old son with a branch. >> a grand jury having indicted this case looked at the injuries inflicted upon this child and determined that discipline was not reasonable. >> reporter: his attorney says he was simply disciplining his child. peterson kept off the field even

as these fans in minnesota showed up wearing his jersey. and ray rice showing up for the first time since being indefinitely suspended by the nfl for knocking out his wife in an elevator showing one his family at a football game. nfl analysts mincing no words. >> i thing ray rice case has been handled wrong from the start. >> there's a question of roger goodell's honesty in the situation. >> you can't beat a kid to make them do what they want to do. >> that's correct. >> reporter: ryan smith, abc news, new york. there is another major sports figure making headlines this morning after nearly cutting off his left hand with a chainsaw. hall of fame golfer greg norman posted this photo from his hospital bed on instagram. he was cutting back trees at his south florida home when his left hand slipped into the teeth of the chainsaw cutting into his wrist, missing an artery by just a fraction of an inch. the 59-year-old australian tweeted, "working with a chainsaw, always be

respectful of the unexpected." a manhunt is intensifying after a deadly ambush outside state police barracks in northeast pennsylvania. two troopers were shot friday night without warning. brian dickson was killed and alex wallace injured. there are no suspects at this time. there's a reward being offered for victims that lead to an arrest. detectives are getting many leads. the global manhunt is intensifying for the masked man seen executing a third hostage. a british aide worker david haines. his family had tried in vain to win his release in the year and a half since his kidnapping. his final words before his beheading were a statement blaming his execution on prime minister david cameron. >> david has been murdered in the most callous and brutal way imaginable by an organization which is the embodiment of evil. >> the british prime minister says his country is stepping up its counterterrorism efforts and will support the u.s. military

in defeating isis. the grisly executions of david haines and james foley and steven sotloff have made it very clear that isis is targeting westerners in the middle east. but does that threat extend to our shores? here's abc's martha raddatz. rather with u.s. air strikes pounding targets and slowing the advance of isis in iraq, it was easy to think isis could be contained overseas. but it was the secretary of defense himself who gave this alarming warning. >> so, yes, they are an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether it's in iraq or anywhere else. >> reporter: joint chiefs chairman martin dempsey added to those concerns. >> if they were to achieve that vision, it would fundamentally alter the face of the middle east and create a security environment that would certainly threaten us in many ways. >> reporter: but those frank statements created an urgency that the white house did not want. top administration officials

began walking the statements back. >> we have no credible information that isil is planning to attack the homeland of the united states. >> in our view, any threat to the u.s. homeland from these types of extremists is likely to be limited in scope and scale. >> reporter: instead of the imminent threat which hagel warned about, the white house now says it is a potential threat. whether it is potential or imminent, the threat from isis is resonating across the country. a poll this week showing 90% of americans believe isis poses a serious threat to the united states. martha raddatz, abc news, washington. the respiratory illness blamed for hospitalizing hundreds of children is now spreading to the northeast. connecticut and new york are the latest states to report cases of enterovirus d-68. the centers for disease control have not yet confirmed the new outbreaks. doctors expect the virus could spread to the entire country.

the problem at the seattle airport is measles. someone with that disease passed through the airport earlier this month while at the infectious stage. measles symptoms take 7 to 21 days to develop, meaning anyone at the seatac airport the evening of september 6th should watch for fever or unexplained rashes. this is frightening. >> this is really frightening. you get the measles, mumps rubella inoculation. the standard go-to. here's what to do if you see symptoms -- do not go into the doctor's office or hospital because obviously it's highly infectious. you could risk spreading it if you have it. call first. describe your symptoms. you'll then be advised -- >> i would go straight to the doctor's office, too. the folks at mit created this mathematical model to see which airports were most at risk. surprising. they found new york jfk, l.a., los angeles and honolulu. would you have thought honolulu? >> no, atlanta because it being, you know, the busiest airport. >> interesting. honolulu only 30% but a hub of distant places that come over. >> very interesting.

also this monday morning, as many as five wildfires are burning in california forcing more than 1,000 people from their homes. the latest broke out near the foothill community out of oakhurst near yosemite national park. it's only about 10% contained. crews are battling all these fires under triple digit temperatures. extreme conditions there. fast moving flames just chew up that dry brush ravaged by three years of drought conditions. in oregon, a fire burning in mt. hood national forest. forced the closure of a campground and r.v. park along with a highway. flames are burning timber and grass. no structures are being threatened by the fire, but investigators believe the fire may have been started by target shooters. another hurricane is taking aim on mexico's baja peninsula. hurricane odile bearing down on the resort area of los cabos with winds up to 125 miles an hour churning up deadly surf, rain and mass evacuations. mexican authorities have stepped

up emergency shelters to hold up to 30,000 people. from the pacific hurricane to the record heat in the fire zone, it's a very different story here in the northeast. >> that's right. grab a jacket. hard to believe. meteorologist jim dickey tracking it all at accuweather. >> good morning. it will be a chilly morning here across the northeast. many spots down to 30s and 40s. a few spots down near that freezing point. with that frost and freeze zeier out, looking for the first frost of the season. portions of new england, including the higher elevations, vermont, new hampshire into upstate new york. meanwhile, tracking a major hurricane here bearing down on baja, california. it will continue to track its way north and west. could get some of the moisture from odile into the southwest mid to late week. reena and dan, back to you. >> thanks, jim. many of us, myself included, can't start the day without a cup of coffee. can you guess which profession drinks the most?

be measured not by medals won but by the renewed sense of purpose and confidence in your abilities that you have gained." >> reporter: for four days of competition, 400 veterans from 13 countries wounded at war fought for gold, silver and bronze. 98 of the athletes are from america. >> the camaraderie, the friends, the individuals that we've met and the stories we shared, we're going to continue to share those. >> reporter: jill biden was here to cheer them on. >> that's the great thing. i think it doesn't matter who won, who lost. they are all in this together. and really, everybody is cheering everyone else an, whether they are against one another or not. it really doesn't matter. i think it is about camaraderie. and you can see that when you see after the games, they are all shaking hands and when you see the cycling and they are cheering one another on. and you see them cycling in with their arms around one another.

but the murder of 44-year-old david haines on tape was no less horrifying. >> david has been murdered in the most callous and brutal way imaginable by an organization which is the embodiment of evil. >> reporter: as intelligence agencies looked for clues in the video, it appeared to be the same purported executioner with a british accent seen on the videos of americans james foley and steven sotloff. >> this british man has to pay the price. >> people across this country would have been sickened by the fact that it could have been a british citizen. a british citizen who could have carried out this unspeakable act. >> reporter: the setting in the new video is approximately the same. but without the distinguishing road, rock and plant landmarks seen before. isis is aware that u.s. drones have been flying over the area trying to track the location of the hostages or even the execution site. haines, the father of two

children, was kidnapped a year and a half ago when he travelled to syria an a humanitarian relief mission. his brother said he was a victim of religious extremism that threatens every nation. >> my first reaction could be one of hatred. his life wasn't about hatred. it was about love for all men. >> reporter: isis continues to hold at least two more britons and two more americans. brian ross, abc news, new york. another american has been sentenced to hard labor in north korea. 24-year-old matthew miller of california has been given six years accused of entering the country illegally and spying. miller tore up his tourist visa to get arrested. all so he could secretly investigate their prisons. missionary kenneth bae is serving a 15-year sentence for his alleged hostile acts and a third american is facing trial for leaving a bible at a north korean hotel. closer to home, hurricane odile is taking aim at the baja

coast. it's bearing down on los cabos with winds up to 195 miles an hour. it is triggering mass evacuations. mexican authorities have set up emergency shelters to hold up to 30,000 people. odile could dump as many as 15 inches of rain on some areas. a wildfire that broke out near the central california community of oakhurst near the entrance to yosemite is burning out of control. it's one of at least five active wildfires in that state that forced more than 1,000 people from their homes. they are struggling with triple-digit temperatures and brush ravaged by unprecedented three years of drought. >> temperatures in that fire zone could hit records today. >> for the latest an the heat wave in the west and the chill in the northeast, here's jim dickey at accuweather. >> good morning. staying hot across the west here today. many spots in the 90s and triple digits from the pacific northwest to the deserts of arizona.

iowa? >> it's fabulous. >> there's even a campaign bus and a well funded group of supporters called waiting for hillary. it sure caught her husband's attention. >> you know, under the rules, i think we're not supposed to have any contact with them but they are like energizer bunnies. they're everywhere. i will not be baited. i will not. cannot be baited. i'm waiting to be a grandfather. and i want a happy grandmother. >> reporter: mrs. clinton got trounced last time by barack obama here in iowa. this time her supporters say it's all hillary. mrs. clinton insists she hasn't made a decision to run yet but to her supporters out here and her opponents, the campaign has already begun. jonathan karl, abc news, in iowa. former south carolina governor mark stanford is calling off his engagement to the woman he once called his soulmate. sanford announced the breakup with maria on his facebook page blaming ongoing tension with his ex-wife jenny. he divorced jenny after his affair became public in 2009. sanford disappeared for five days claiming he was hiking the appalachian trail.
